CHOCOLATE, CHOCOLATE, CHOCOLATE, this is my favorite chocolate cake recipe!! I love making Bundt Cakes because they are so easy. This one just uses a box cake mix and it turns out perfect every time. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I use my Chocolate Ganache Icing Recipe for this cake.
One trick I figured out along the way is that instead of coating the bundt pans with flour, I use cocoa powder. That way the chocolate cake isn’t dusted with white.

it looks yummy!
It is!!!
Does it have to be refrigerated when it’s cooled down?
No it can sit out at room temperature for a few days since it’s baked.
Do I use dry pudding or make the pudding before puttong into cake
Hi Michele, You just add the dry pudding to the batter. Thanks!
can i make this into large cupcakes ? looks wonderful !
Hi Andrea, I have never tried making it into cupcakes but I think it would work. You would need to adjust the baking time & bake it for less minutes.
Its in the oven as I type. It smells great. And the batter tasted yummy. ha.
Thanks :)
I have made this many times from the back of the Aldi’s cake mix box. It is really good. They add 4 eggs though. I have never had anything to put in the top of it so excited to try the icing. It is so good thought that I have ever worried about icing for it.
Hope you like it!
I wanted to make a chocolate/sour cream bundt cake for mother’s day this weekend, using a cake mix (all I ever have around here is whole wheat flour and nobody but me would ever eat a whole wheat cake!) but I don’t know what the purpose of adding the pudding is — doesn’t it make the cake overly sweet? Is it because we’re trying to turn a regular cake into more of a pound cake? Any idea what would happen if I did everything else in the recipe but not add the pudding mix? Thank you!
Hi, It makes the cake more moist, I never noticed any extra sweetness just a little more chocolatey. I think it will turn out just fine without it since the other thing that makes it moist is the sour cream, so make sure you add that. You could also add in one more tablespoon of cocoa powder if you don’t add the pudding in. Hope this helps and that you have a great weekend!
Does the pudding have to be instant? Thanks!
Hi Lisa. Yes it does need to be instant. Thanks
Made it for a friend its was wonderful !!!!!great recipe thanks and God bless
Thanks Miguel! Glad you liked it!
This is the best chocolate cake I’ve tried starting with a cake mix. I used a cake mix that already had some mini chips in it. I used a 13×9 pan because sometimes my cakes come out too dark in the bundt pan. So moist and delicious! Everyone at work loves it. Thanks for such a great recipe.
Thank you! I’m so glad you liked it.
Can I use regular size chocolate chips? If not, should I chop them finer? It’s all I have.
Hi Beverly. Regular should work just fine.
How many mini bundts does this recipe make?
Hi Lisa. I’m not sure what size the mini bundt are, but a standard bundt holds approximately 8-9 cups of batter. Don’t forget to cut your baking time way down for mini’s. You should still be able to insert a toothpick in and have it come out clean to know it is done. I am not positive, but I think a lot of the mini’s hold 1 cup of a batter. Sorry I am not a better help.
Cake turned out great but the icing didn’t get hard? It is quite runny, any ideas?
Hmmm. this is my go to icing recipe. I haven’t had that problem… I would say let it sit for a little bit and cool, or refrigerate it. I’m so sorry this happened. It usually gets thick when cooling.
Just making sure, mix cake mix and instant pudding together dry then add other ingredients?
Hi Sylvia. Yes mix them dry and add. Thanks
Can people use yogurt instead of sour cream?
Hi, Plain or vanilla yogurt should work just fine. Thanks
Hi, does this cake recipe use no oil or butter?
Thanks
Hi, No oil or butter. It doesn’t need it because of the sour cream.
Can we use yellow or vanilla cake mix instead of chocolate cake mix..??
Hi. Yes you can, it just will just be a lighter chocolate flavor.
My family really enjoyed this cake. Definitely would make again!
So glad your family liked the cake recipe. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
