Perfect Homemade Hot Dog Buns. These Hot Dog buns have just the right texture & flavor.
It’s that time of the year again for grilling hot dogs & hamburgers! Now I’ve made hamburger buns many times but I’ve never made hot dog buns until now! I guess because I usually eat more hamburgers then hot dogs but its summertime & I’ve been wanting a grilled hot dog for a change.
I’ve shared the images above so you can see how to shape them. You divide the dough into 8 pieces, roll each piece into a 3×5″ rectangle (doesn’t need to be perfect). Then fold it to the center on one side then fold the other side on top of that. Flip it over, tuck the ends under a little, place on cookie sheet about 1″ apart. Let rise.
I love homemade bread. These hot dog buns taste better then the store bought ones. They are made without all those weird unhealthy preservative ingredients and without high fructose corn syrup.
These are pretty easy to make. I know it takes 2 hours of rising time or as I call it waiting time but the amount of hands on time it takes to make these homemade hot dogs buns is actually very little.
Makes 8 hot dog buns.
- 2 teaspoons yeast
- ¾ cup warm water
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 egg + 1 egg yolk (save egg white for brushing buns)
- 2 Tablespoons oil (or butter melted)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup sugar
- --Egg Wash--
- egg white + 2 Tablespoons water
- *Add all ingredients together in the order listed then knead dough using your favorite method (by hand, bread machine, or stand mixer with dough hook) for 10 minutes until dough is smooth & elastic.
- Cover & let rise 1 hour or until double in size.
- Divide dough into 8 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece on lightly floured surface into a 3x5" rectangle.
- Take the top (long side of rectangle) and fold to the center length wise, take the bottom piece and fold to the center length wise also. Flip over, gently tuck the end pieces under and place on greased cookie sheet. Place each roll ½-1" apart so they support each other & rise upwards.
- Let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- After rising brush with egg wash (to make egg wash whisk egg white & water together with fork).
- Preheat oven to 375 F. degrees.
- Bake 15 minutes or until tops are golden brown.
*I make this using my breadmachine & just add all the ingredients together (I like to start by adding the yeast & water then everything else) & let my machine knead it for 10 min. on the dough setting then I turn it off. If your hand mixing you can add the ingredients to large mixing bowl, begin stirring with a large wooden spoon until dough ball forms then move to a lightly floured surface to knead.
Sorry–I’m a bread newbie. First instructions says knead the dough. Prior to that, do I just throw all the ingredients in the mixing bowl together? No dry ing first, then add wet ing?
Hi Barbara, That’s exactly what I do. I just throw everything together in my breadmachine bowl & then let it knead for about 10 minutes. Although for some reason I always start with the yeast & water then add everything else. If your hand mixing I’d throw everything into a large mixing bowl, start my hand stirring it until it sort of forms a ball then move it to a floured surface & knead it by hand.
I love making homemade hot dog buns. So far, I’ve made whole wheat, cornbread and pretzel versions. Can’t wait to give this version a try. Hot dogs are never the same after they’ve met homemade bread ;)
A million or so years ago the high school before everyone moved up to Alaska for the “Oil Boom” the cooks in the kitchen made homemade hot dog buns, omg I loved them!! And though I make a lot of bread this is the first hot dog roll recipe I’ve come across. I just made my seeded multi grain bread today so tomorrow I’m making hot dogs!!
Hi Cindy, I hope you like this hot dog recipe. I make it all summer long for grilling out hot dogs.
While I don’t eat hot dogs I eat sausages and a grilled sausage would be fabulous in this homemade bun. They are cooked to perfection, golden brown!
I love making grilled sausage too, these buns can definitely work for that too :)
I made these tonight and they turned out excellent! This was the first time I baked bread from scratch, and this recipe was very easy to follow! Thank you so much!
Hi Brandy! I’m so glad they turned out for you! I love using this recipe for hot dog buns.
Thanks for the recipe, this is my second time making them, my hubby brags about me making bread and we have not bought store made bread in about a year since I started making all sorts of breads. Loved the recipe, keep them coming.
Hi Gisel, Thanks for commenting! I am so glad you like the recipe. I love this recipe for hot dog buns. I had so many frozen in my freezer that I used it to make stuffing for thanksgiving this year & it actually makes really good stuffing too. :)
Those have to be the best looking hot dog buns ever. I am definitely trying this recipe out.
Thanks! I hope you like them! I just made a batch last week for a cookout!
The best hot dog buns EVER!! I made them last night for grilled brats and impressed my husband, once again!! Thank you for the awesome recipe!!
Hi Vivian, I’m so glad you liked the hot dog bun recipe! I love making them for when I grill out too!
You stated above in the recipe to add yeast. Which kind? Rapid rise??
Hi Stacey, You can use either yeast the rapid rise just rises a lot quicker then regular active dry. I prefer the Instant Yeast (also known as Fast-Rising, Rapid-Rise, Quick Rise).
Thank you for sharing. I was looking for a technique to shape the buns without rolling the dough, and I found it here! These look great. I’ll use your method tonight.
Hi Anna, I hope you like the recipe. I make these hot dog buns all the time.
Can you use this same recipe to make hamburger rolls?
Hi Jessica,
Yes this recipe works for hamburger buns as well. I’ve made them before.

these buns were fantastic! Just made a bunch yesterday to put in the freezer so I have some on hand. We had hamburgers last minute the other day and I had to buy hamburger buns for the first time in a long time, not nearly as good as these homemade ones! Thanks for sharing the recipe
I’m so glad you liked the bun recipe! It’s one of my favorites! Thanks for commenting.

What would you do when folding/shaping the dough to make them hamburger buns?
Hi Brittany, To make them hamburger buns I roll the dough into a ball, flatten it down slightly with the palm of my hand then use a rolling pin to finish flattening it into a circle shape.
Thanks so much for this recipe! I make bread all the time, but for some reason just don’t make hot dog buns. I just tripled the recipe to make 24 to take tomorrow for thanksgiving as we’re having grilled chili dogs & brats @ our daughter & son-in-laws house. 1 batch in the bread maker on dough cycle & double batch I made in my Kitchen Aid mixer. I let my dough hook do the work kneading. It’s all raising now. Can’t wait to eat home made buns tomorrow! Thank You!
Hi Becca, Grilled brats & chili dogs sound delicious. I hope you like the hot dog buns. Have a Happy Thanksgiving & thanks for commenting!
I’ve actually started using this recipe for my dinner rolls because my kids loved them so much! I just make 12 rolls instead of buns, throw them in a 9×13 pan and cook slightly longer.
Hi Emily, I am glad your kids like the recipe. That’s great that it works for dinner rolls too. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
Thank you for the recipe! They are the best I have tasted so far, and I make my own bread, my family is now totally spoiled, and me too, these buns are so good and beautiful. We are going camping soon, so I sm busy making batches, no way we are buying bipuns when those are just so good. I used 2 cups bread white flour and 1 cup bread multigran flour… the best!
Hi Danielle, I’m so glad you & your family like the recipe. It is one of my favorites. I hope you have a great camping trip. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we greatly appreciate it!
