Old Fashioned Oil Biscuits (Foolproof).
This recipe for Old Fashioned Oil Biscuits is only one of two recipes I have for biscuits that have been foolproof for me. My cheese biscuits are the only other biscuit recipe that turns out for me. My sister can make the best buttermilk biscuits but I have always struggled to make biscuits that don’t turn out like hockey pucks that are flat and hard. This recipe is a classic and it is is easy. If I can make it then I consider it foolproof.
This recipe uses only basic ingredients which is a plus if you are like me and you haven’t been to the grocery store in a month.
Recipe makes 10-12 medium sized biscuits. We also cut the recipe in half to make small batches sometimes.
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 Tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup milk
- Preheat oven to 425 F.
- Mix the dry ingredients together (flour, baking powder, salt). Add oil and milk. Mix together just until ingredients are combined.
- Roll into 2.5" balls.
- Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Press down slightly with the palm of your hand or the bottom of a glass so the tops are flat. Place them so the edges are touching.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes.
Just made these and I think they may be my go-to biscuits! The dough seemed A little wet so I added A tablespoon of flour then patted it out on some bench flour. Cut them out and baked in a 12-inch iron skillet and they are wonderful! I love the oil method because it is something I can do with my eyes still closed. ?
Becky, So glad you liked the recipe. It is a favorite of ours. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!

Hi can these biscuits be made with olive oil?
Hi Mae, Yes, you can use olive oil.
Thank you. Remember these from back when I was a child in rural Mississippi. My great aunts made busuit dough with oil not crisco. So much better with oil.
We like the oil biscuits too. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it.
My mom always used 1/3 cup oil instead. That should make them not so sticky.
Very good recipe? I doubled it for freezing some. They did not brown on top? Why?
Hi Pat, I’m not sure why they did not brown on top. Maybe they needed more baking time. I have also read that brushing the tops with butter before baking helps them brown more.
I made a half batch of these yesterday using whole wheat flour and baked them in the air fryer at 375. They turned out well — my husband (the biscuit connoiseur in this household) approved! Today I am going to tmake the same recipe, with enough additional flour that I can roll it out and see whether it will work as pizza dough.
So glad the recipe worked for you. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it.
Thank you thank you thank you Katie for this awesome so very easy homeade bisquit receipe! It was so simple yet the bisquits don’t taste simple they taste like a ton of work went into them! Yes a little effort was involved but it was easy. I had a good feeling these were gonna turn out really good you know by the way the dough turned out! I’m so thrilled I can finally make a batch of homeade bisquits without stressing whether or not their gonna turn out! Thanks so very much for this!!

I tried these today but I didn’t have any milk so I used 1/3 c goat milk yogurt and 2/3 c water. They are delicious! Thank you for the recipe which I’m sure I’ll make regularly.
Ali, I’m glad the goat milk yogurt worked as a substitute for you. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
Made these for the first time and added some cheddar cheese and a few sultanas and raisins. Taste good. Got the buiscuits to brown by putting under a grill to finish off. Thanks for the recipe.
So glad the biscuits turned out for you. Love the additions you added. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
Hope I don’t eat all of them before everyone gets home!
Love these biscuits . So easy, thought the dough would be sticky but it wasn’t, easy to make little balls. Thankyou for the recipe.
