Serves: 8-10
  • 1 cup very warm water
  • 2¼ teaspoons dry active yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup butter, softened -(plus more for brushing, if desired)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (maybe ¼c. more)
  1. Bread Machine/Stand Mixer with Dough Hook Method: Add very warm water & yeast. Then add 3 cups flour, sugar, salt, egg, & ¼ cup softened butter. Start mixing.
  2. Check dough after 2 minutes. If it's too wet add up to ¼ cup more flour & continue to let it knead for 8 more minutes.
  3. Shape dough into a ball if your using a mixer & cover bowl with a towel. Let rise until doubled in size. About 1-1½ hours.
  4. Grease cookie sheet
  5. Divide the dough into 8-10 balls. Lightly flour the surface you are rolling them out on. Roll each ball out into a 12-14" rope. Take one end of the rope into each hand & twist in opposite directions. (I twisted each end about 6-7 times). Now pick it up by the ends & the rope will twist itself.
  6. Place on greased cookie sheet. (Brush with melted butter, if desired)
  7. Let rise until doubled in size, about 40 min.
  8. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Optional: Brush tops with melted butter if desired & sprinkle with garlic, parmesan, or herbs.
