We love dirt cake at our house, so we made this one for Easter. You can’t go wrong with oreo cookies, pudding, and cool whip. You can add whatever you want to the top, Peeps, jelly beans, edible grass, etc.
For the carrots I just whipped up some vanilla frosting, then added food coloring to get it orange. Then I put it in a plastic bag and clipped the corner off. I squeezed little orange blobs on some wax paper and put them in the freezer for 10 min. until they were set. Next I used a tooth pick and poked a hole in the top and added a few pieces of the edible grass (amazon affiliate). You should be able to find edible grass at places like Target & Walmart. I’ve seen it for sale at both places, it’s located with the Easter candy & usually costs $2 or less.
My daughter came in after I put the carrots on the cake and asked for a carrot. I gave her one and she looked at me and said, “I want a whole carrot”. Then I had to tell her that the carrots didn’t go all the way to the bottom of the pan, they were just carrot tops. She was a little disappointed.

You could make your rice krispie carrots (small ones) tinted orange and cut holes in the cake and push them into the dirt with the edible grass topped with a bit of frosting….. best of both worlds
Great idea!!
Where can I find the rick krispie carrots?
Hi, You actually make the carrots out of frosting. There are instructions and pictures on the post.
A friend of mine used to make this for my son when he was younger. She put it in a cheap sand pail (from the dollar store) and put gummy worms coming out of the cake.
Hi Carolyn. The first time I had dirt cake, my Nana-inlaw made it like that. So cute!
How long ahead of time could you make this?
Hi, Christina. 1-2 days should be fine. Maybe just don’t put the decorations on the cake until the day that your going to serve it.
Is it 3 cups of milk even if the pudding mix says 4 cups?
Yes, because you are adding the cool whip, butter and cream cheese in too.
Love this idea! I am going to try it this weekend.
Hope you like it! Have a Happy Easter!
Can you freeze this or just chill in the fridge?
Hi Kate, I have never frozen it but I have heard of people freezing dirt cake. I always chill in the fridge.
Awww, how cute your daughter is. BTW easter dirt cake is awesome….
Do I scrape the white filling off the Oreos before putting in the food processor? Your cake looks so dark and chocolatey…
Nope, I just used regular oreo’s and food processed it all. Good luck, I’m sure yours will look just like it!
Can you use sugar free pudding?
Yes sugar free should work just fine.
Can you not use cream cheese in this recipe and it still come out the same?
Hi, It’s not going to come out the same, the cream cheese gives it a different texture and flavor. Cream cheese makes it thicker and takes out some of the sweetness. You can still make it and it will be good, just different that the traditional. I’ve never heard anyone complain about oreo’s or pudding! :)
