I love this bread! It’s great for sandwiches or just bread and butter. It last several days as long as you store it in a ziploc bag, plus it freezes well. I usually leave one loaf out to eat and freeze the other until I want it.
Once you put all the ingredients in the bread machine and it has mixed for a few mins. your dough should look like this:
If it’s too wet add teaspoons of flour until you get it right and if it’s too dry add teaspoons of water.
Once it’s done in the bread machine, pull it out and put on floured surface and divide in half. I like to tuck all the sides of the dough under to give the top a smooth look:
Place in the greased pans, cover and let rise until doubled:
Bake until top is golden brown about 20-25 mins and then rub butter on top if you want to. Let cool a few mins. before you slice.
- 1 package of quick rise yeast
- 1 cup of warm water
- ¼ cup sugar
- ⅛ cup of oil
- 3½ cups of bread flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- Put ingredients in bread machine in the order they are listed. Yeast, warm water, sugar, oil, flour, salt and egg. Set to dough cycle. Check bread after it's mixed for a few mins. it should be a nice round ball of dough. If it's too wet/dry keep adding teaspoons of flour/water to get the right consistency.
- When the cycle is done grease 2 bread pans, divide the dough in half, put dough in pans. Cover pans with towel or plastic wrap. Let sit until doubled (usually 30-60 mins).
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake bread for 20-25 mins. until tops are golden. Optional: You can take a teaspoon of cold butter and rub in on the tops of the hot loaves.
Hi! Can instant yeast be used instead of quick acting yeast? also, I don’t have a bread machine, so can I use my stand mixer instead? If I can how long would I mix the dough in this recipe before taking it out and forming the loaves?
Thanks in advance. :-)
Hi Susanne, Yes you can use instant yeast it is the same thing as quick acting but different brands call it different names. You can knead the dough by hand or using a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. You want to knead it for about 10-15 minutes until a nice ball forms and cover loosely with plastic wrap in a bowl or use a clean kitchen towel to cover it. Let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size then place in loaf pans and allow to rise again. Thanks.
I have a 2pd bread maker. Can i do the baking in it on my quick bread setting? Thanks
Hi Patricia, A 2 lb bread machine can usually handle up to 4 cups of flour so it could be made in it but I personally don’t recommend it. I find the results to be much better if baked in the oven. The bread machine will make the bread dense and it will have a thick crust.
