Old Fashioned Sour Cream Drop Sugar Cookies
My sister & I celebrated Christmas early this year so we did our Christmas cookie baking last week. My sister whipped up these cookies & I love them because they really do remind me of old fashioned sugar cookies. They are easy to make because you just drop the dough onto the cookie sheet. You can roll or sprinkle the tops of the cookies with sprinkles if you want. We did red & green for Christmas.
These cookies are super moist & have that old fashioned sugar cookie taste like my Grandma’s recipe for sugar cookies only without the shortening. Huge plus because I mainly bake with butter now.
Tip: The dough is a little sticky, you can refrigerate it for 20-30 min. if you want it to be easier to work with.
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1½ cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- sprinkles (optional)
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets or line with non stick baking mats.
- Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together, set aside.
- With an electric mixer cream butter, sugar, and egg together.
- Slowly mix in sour cream and vanilla.
- Gradually mix in flour mixture.
- Drop battery by tablespoons full onto prepared cookie sheets. Top with sprinkles (optional)
- Bake 10-12 min. or until turning slight golden brown.
I don’t make drop cookies often enough! I love how festive these are. Happy Holidays, Katie & Holly!
Thanks Megan! Happy Holidays to you too!!
These cookies are so pretty Katie. Hope you had a great holiday. :)
Thank you! I hope you did as well!
These are lighter and better than my former SC cookie recipe.
Hi Jan, I’m glad you like them!
Hi can you make these but make some flat and put frosten on them
Hi Denise, The dough is pretty sticky but you could try to flatten them out, maybe with a glass dipped in sugar or flour.
My son(age 38) is a die-hard sugar cookie monster.. Ihate rolling out the dough, but with this you drop them on parchment paper after putting in refrig…I frosted with a canned frosting and got 5 star reviews
Hi Mary, I’m glad the cookie recipe received 5 star reviews! Thanks so much for commenting!
Thank you so much! I have been searching for old fashioned cookie recipes that were actually on par with the original recipes. Most I have found to have been changed so much that they taste nothing like the originals, that I remember my nana making so many years ago!
I cannot wait to try some of your other cookie recipes!!
Hi Lori, I hope you like the recipe. Old Fashioned Cookies are my favorite to make because they remind me of my grandmas recipes. Thanks for commenting.
I NEEDED VALENTINE COOKIES FOR A CROWD IN A HURRY…THESE ARE VERY GOOD, SOFT SUGAR COOKIES!!! EASY TO MAKE AND GREAT WITH NO FROSTING…JUST THE SPRINKLES! THEY ARE EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS THE ONES YOU CHILL, ROLL OUT AND CUT, THEN TRY TO TRANSFER TO BAKING SHEETS….LOTS OF WORK! THIS RECIPE WILL BECOME MY GO-TO SUGAR COOKIE!! JUST ADD THE RIGHT COLOR SPRINKLES FOR THE OCCASION!
Hi Beverly, So glad you liked the recipe! Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it.
If I need to make this dough ahead of time to take to a baking day with family, is it ok to chill it? I think the little kids might enjoy dropping the cookies and doing the sprinkles…
Hi. Yes, the cookie dough could be made ahead of time and chilled. Thanks.
These taste amazing but mine don’t ever turn out like the picture. They spread a lot. I would like them to look more like drop
Cookies. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi Becca, I try and use unbleached flour like King Arthur, that has really helped my cookies to stay thicker. I use daisy sour cream which might be thicker then some other brands. If your sour cream was thin you could try adding an extra 1-2 Tablespoons.
What is the best way to store these cookies for short term eating? I plan to freeze some for later. Do you cool them on the cookie sheet and then transfer to rack? Asking for next time since I already made them. First one, warm from the oven tastes great.
Lois, I usually just let them cool on the cookie sheet but you can also cool them on a rack. Once they are cool you can store them at room temperature in an air-tight container for 2-3 days or freeze them. Thanks.
The cookies were delicious!
So glad you liked them! Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it.
