Soft Sugar Cookies with frosting.
I love making sugar cookies! The recipe I share below produces Soft Sugar Cookies. You can frost them, coat them in sugar, whatever you wish. I have a classic vanilla frosting recipe below or if you want to try something different I’ve been using an old fashioned frosting recipe that doesn’t use powdered sugar. Please note: you only need to make half a recipe if you make the old fashioned frosting recipe I share in a different post.
I usually don’t make sugar cookies that require chill time in the frig but this recipe really does make soft sugar cookies. The dough is too sticky and soft to work with if you don’t chill it first. I think the sour cream in the cookies helps to keep them extra soft.
Makes about 20-24 cookies.
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup softened salted butter
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ⅓ cup sour cream
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- -Sugar Cookie Frosting-
- ½ cup softened salted butter
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- Preheat oven to 375 F. degrees. Grease cookie sheets or line with non stick baking mat.
- Cream sugar and butter for 2-3 minutes using an electric mixer. Add egg, vanilla and sour cream.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda & baking powder. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture, beat until smooth.
- Chill dough covered for at least 1 hour or overnight.
- options: Roll out and cut with round cookie cutter or you can roll into 1.5" balls & flatten cookies with the bottom of a sugar dipped glass.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Sugar Cookie Frosting:
- After the cookies are cooled, frost them if you desire.
- Beat butter, powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until smooth. Add additional milk or powdered sugar to find the desired consistency.
