Old Fashioned Soft Honey Cookies.
This recipe makes an old fashioned style honey sugar cookie. I just received a jar of fresh raw honey from someone who is a beekeeper and I have been trying to come up with new recipes to use it in ever since. I really like this recipe. I have never made cookies with honey before and I think the honey adds a good flavor and texture to the cookies. This recipe would also be good with chocolate chips added.
Recipe makes 24-48 cookies depending on what size you make them. I like to make big cookies and used a 2.5 Tablespoon cookie scoop to make these. When I want smaller cookies I use a cookie scoop that is just over 1 Tablespoon.
- 1 cup (2 sticks) salted softened butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ⅓ cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3½ cups all purpose flour
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- Preheat oven to 350 F. degrees. Grease cookie sheets.
- Cream butter and sugar together either by hand or with a mixer. Mix in eggs, vanilla, & honey.
- Add flour & baking soda & mix well.
- Drop by the heaping tablespoon full onto cookie sheets.
- Bake 10-12 minutes until they are just starting to turn golden brown.

Hi Ashley, I’m so glad you liked the recipe! Thanks for commenting we appreciate it.
How much salt do i put in if I only have unsalted butter?
Hi Katie, You would need to add 1/2 teaspoon of salt if using unsalted butter. Thanks!
These are soooo yummy. I made them twice in one week.
Hi Stacy, I’m so glad you like this cookie recipe, it’s one of my favorites. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
Would I be able to make this dough in advance and just slice and bake ?
Hi Kat, I have never made these as slice and bake cookies but I think based on the dough consistency it could work. Thanks!
Consistency is amazing!! I added a tsp of cloves and 2 drops of wild orange essential oil. So good!
Hi Kayla, I’m so glad you liked the recipe. Love the alterations you made, sounds good! Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
I added some orange zest to the dough and a half walnut on top. Yummy. Next time, I’ll add some chopped dried cranberries. A little cinnamon would be good too. This is a recipe you can “play” with.
Hi Kimberly, Love the additions you made, sounds delicious. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
Hi! I tried making these yesterday and had some trouble with the dough. It was kind of crumbly and the cookies turned out lumpy. Are they meant to be dropped like chocolate chip cookies? They tasted wonderful but I’d like them to look nice too. Any advice? I tried creaming the sugar and butter with a pastry cutter but it didn’t work as well as it does with white sugar.
Thanks!
Hi EJ, They are drop cookies. I used a cookie scoop to make mine. I have a link to the one I used in the post. Thanks!
I just made these and they taste great, but mine look nothing like your picture. Did you chill your dough? Mine spread out like a typical chocolate chip cookie or sugar cookie would.
Hi Sara, No I did not chill the dough. I used a cookie scoop though which might have made the shape turn out a little different. If yours turned out too flat I’d add a little extra flour next time. Thanks!
Do you use a liquid or a dry measuring cup to measure the honey?
