Old Fashioned Soft Honey Cookies.
This recipe makes an old fashioned style honey sugar cookie. I just received a jar of fresh raw honey from someone who is a beekeeper and I have been trying to come up with new recipes to use it in ever since. I really like this recipe. I have never made cookies with honey before and I think the honey adds a good flavor and texture to the cookies. This recipe would also be good with chocolate chips added.
Recipe makes 24-48 cookies depending on what size you make them. I like to make big cookies and used a 2.5 Tablespoon cookie scoop to make these. When I want smaller cookies I use a cookie scoop that is just over 1 Tablespoon.
- 1 cup (2 sticks) salted softened butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ⅓ cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3½ cups all purpose flour
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- Preheat oven to 350 F. degrees. Grease cookie sheets.
- Cream butter and sugar together either by hand or with a mixer. Mix in eggs, vanilla, & honey.
- Add flour & baking soda & mix well.
- Drop by the heaping tablespoon full onto cookie sheets.
- Bake 10-12 minutes until they are just starting to turn golden brown.

I just made these and they are delicious! Light yummy honey flavor and so so soft!
Hi Ashley, I’m so glad you liked the recipe! Thanks for commenting we appreciate it.
How much salt do i put in if I only have unsalted butter?
Hi Katie, You would need to add 1/2 teaspoon of salt if using unsalted butter. Thanks!
These are soooo yummy. I made them twice in one week.
Hi Stacy, I’m so glad you like this cookie recipe, it’s one of my favorites. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
Would I be able to make this dough in advance and just slice and bake ?
Hi Kat, I have never made these as slice and bake cookies but I think based on the dough consistency it could work. Thanks!
Consistency is amazing!! I added a tsp of cloves and 2 drops of wild orange essential oil. So good!
Hi Kayla, I’m so glad you liked the recipe. Love the alterations you made, sounds good! Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
I added some orange zest to the dough and a half walnut on top. Yummy. Next time, I’ll add some chopped dried cranberries. A little cinnamon would be good too. This is a recipe you can “play” with.
Hi Kimberly, Love the additions you made, sounds delicious. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
Hi! I tried making these yesterday and had some trouble with the dough. It was kind of crumbly and the cookies turned out lumpy. Are they meant to be dropped like chocolate chip cookies? They tasted wonderful but I’d like them to look nice too. Any advice? I tried creaming the sugar and butter with a pastry cutter but it didn’t work as well as it does with white sugar.
Thanks!
Hi EJ, They are drop cookies. I used a cookie scoop to make mine. I have a link to the one I used in the post. Thanks!
I just made these and they taste great, but mine look nothing like your picture. Did you chill your dough? Mine spread out like a typical chocolate chip cookie or sugar cookie would.
Hi Sara, No I did not chill the dough. I used a cookie scoop though which might have made the shape turn out a little different. If yours turned out too flat I’d add a little extra flour next time. Thanks!
Do you use a liquid or a dry measuring cup to measure the honey?
Hello
Can you freeze them?
Hi Athina, Yes the cookies can be frozen but I don’t recommend freezing them for more then a few weeks. Thanks.
I made these twice so far the first time they came out amazing by boyfriend who isn’t a fan of sweets ate so many! This time they were kinda dry and really hard I followed the same recipe and so I don’t know what I did wrong
Hi Luna, I’m not sure why it didn’t turn out as soft the second time you made it, did you bake it for the same amount of time? Maybe they were over baked.
Absolutely delicious! I made with raw local honey and they turned out great. Soft and pillowy. Be sure to try one when warm – my husband and I could have eaten them all!
Hi Carrie, I’m so glad you liked the honey cookies. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
Hi Katie! I am really looking forward to trying this recipe! They were out of brown sugar at the store; do you think white sugar would work? Thank you so much for your advice!
Hi Andrea, You can make it with regular sugar but the taste and texture will be a little different. Thanks!
Copy that- thank you so much for the quick reply!
Awesome cookies! so easy and tasty :)
Hi Nicole, So glad you liked the cookies. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it.
Oh my gosh!!! So delicious! Came out perfect. I’d like just a bit more honey taste, would it come out different if I add a little more honey? Should I bake the same amount of time?
Hi Suzanne, I think it really depends on what type of honey you are using. Light honeys are mild and don’t have much flavor. Darker honeys are going to give you a more distinct flavor. Thanks.
These cookies turned out soft and yummy. I added a pecan to the top of some and chocolate chips to the top of some. Excellent recipe!
So glad you liked the cookies. Adding pecans and chocolate chips sounds delicious. Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it.
This may be a dumb question I’m sorry but does one brown sugar over the the other taste better? Dark brown vs light brown sugar?
Danielle, You can use either type. I usually use light.
I forget when I first stumbled upon your recipe (it’s probably been at least a couple years) – this is an all time favorite of mine! So soft and just the perfect touch of sweet honey flavor. I make them often for our connection group (but it’s selfishly so I can eat them too!) – always a crowd pleaser!
Hi Mallory, So glad you like the honey cookie recipe! Thanks for taking the time to comment, we appreciate it.
Is dough more runny or soft is a better description than other cookies?
The dough should be pretty normal compared to other cookies, it is not thin or runny.
I have been making your honey cookie recipe for a few years now and we love them. I use raw honey and change nothing in the recipe. They are always perfect. Thanks for the recipe.
